I work in this field Britt and this is definitely a scam. It has the urgency, the begging, the minimal information shared, the individual targeting via email, etc. Overall, never ever send money to an individual on the Internet, no matter how desperate they might sound. Tell them to open a fundraising page on a legit website and there you can help them modestly. And look at them disappear after that.
